Resolve common email delivery issues with our step-by-step guide.
Understanding the 550 - Relay Not Permitted Error
The "550 - Relay Not Permitted" error message appears when an email is returned to the sender without being delivered to your inbox. This issue often arises when a domain is newly added to your hosting account and has yet to be verified by our system.
Causes of the 550 - Relay Not Permitted Error
Several common factors can cause this error message to appear:
- Your domain is hosted with us and has the correct name servers, but the system has not yet verified the name servers.
- This issue frequently occurs when domains have just been added to the Hosted Domains section in your Control Panel.
DNS Verification Process
When a domain is added to your account, our system verifies its DNS settings. Initially, a red icon will display in the DNS column, indicating that name servers are not yet recognized as correct. It may take up to several hours for this verification process to complete.
Once the name servers are verified, a green check mark will replace the red icon in the DNS column, confirming proper DNS configuration.
Resolving the Issue
Usually, this problem resolves itself once the system verifies your domain's name servers. However, if the issue persists beyond 12 hours, follow these steps:
- Ensure your domain is using the correct name servers.
- If the error persists, open a support ticket to request a manual DNS verification.
For more information about required name servers, refer to our guide on correct DNS settings for your domain.
Important Note on DNS Propagation
It typically takes 12–24 hours after updating your domain’s name servers for changes to take effect across the internet. During this period, you may experience intermittent email delivery issues as DNS updates propagate.
