How to Setup My Email Account in Mozilla Thunderbird

Learn how to configure your email account manually in Mozilla Thunderbird, including details on server settings, security options, and account setup steps.

Before You Begin

To manually set up your email account in Thunderbird, make sure you have the following details provided by your email provider, available in the Email > Mailboxes section of your Control Panel:

  • Incoming mail server: e.g., "pop.example.com" (port 110) or "imap.example.com" (port 143)
  • Outgoing mail server: e.g., "smtp.example.com" (port 25)
  • Security settings: STARTTLS, SSL/TLS, or NONE; and secure authentication options if applicable

Step-by-Step Setup Guide

  1. Open Account Settings: Go to Tools > Account Settings in Thunderbird.

  2. Add a New Account: In the Account Settings panel, click Account Actions > Add Mail Account.

  3. Enter Account Details: Provide your name, email address, and password. Click Continue to proceed.

  4. Choose Account Type: Thunderbird will attempt to detect your account settings. Choose IMAP (recommended) or POP3 as your preferred incoming mail protocol.

  5. Manual Configuration: If Thunderbird doesn’t find the settings automatically, select Manual Configuration to enter server names, ports, and security options. Click Re-test to validate.

  6. Outgoing Server Configuration: Configure the SMTP server settings with the specified port (25 or 2525), select NONE for security, and Normal Password for authentication.

  7. Complete Setup: Enter your email address as the username and click Create Account. Press OK to finish.

Congratulations! Your email account is now configured and ready to use.

Note: For security connection settings, ensure you choose the correct option. If unsure, consult your email provider's support documentation.
