Password Protect a Directory - Creating Multiple Usernames & Passwords

Category: Files & FTP

To protect specific folders on your website, you can use the password protection tool in your Web Hosting Control Panel. Follow the steps below to create multiple usernames and passwords for a directory, ensuring that only authorized users have access.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Open your Web Hosting Control Panel and navigate to Advanced > Password Protection.
  2. Click on the New Password Protected Area button.
  3. From the drop-down menu, select your domain or enter the full path to the folder you want to protect (e.g., /www/my-best-domain.com/protected_folder).
  4. Enter a username and the corresponding password for access.
  5. Click the Add PPA button to confirm the settings.
  6. To add additional users, repeat the above steps with different usernames.

IMPORTANT

If there’s an .htaccess file in the protected folder, the protection might not work. Consider removing the file or using an alternative password protection method.

Tips for Managing Directory Security

Make sure to periodically update passwords to maintain security, and consider combining this protection with other security measures for enhanced protection.
