What is an FTP Account and Why You Might Need Multiple FTP Accounts
Understanding FTP Accounts
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network protocol used for exchanging and manipulating files over a TCP/IP network, such as the Internet. FTP offers a convenient, fast way to upload and download files to and from your server.
To establish an FTP connection, you need an FTP account on the server. An FTP account consists of a username and password, granting access to the server via FTP.
Default vs. Custom FTP Accounts
When your hosting account is created, a default FTP account provides access to the main /www/
folder. However, you can create additional FTP accounts with specific access paths, ensuring that each account accesses only designated folders and subfolders while keeping other areas restricted.
This is especially useful if you need to give a third party, like a web designer, access to your server for uploads without providing full access to your hosting account.
Setting Up and Managing FTP Accounts
New FTP accounts can be created in the FTP Manager section of your Control Panel. Navigate to Files > FTP Accounts
to set up an FTP account with the desired permissions and access path.
